My Conference Day...Part 2.......

My second official conference day has come and gone....fortunately without any incidents!

This time it was a lot easier than the previous. I didn't have as many parents show up, although there were still a lot. It was nice to be able to spend more than 5 minutes with a parent. Usually by the time you sit down and start talking, it's time for them to leave, but that wasn't the case this time.

Luckily all the interactions were positive. No one told me that their child was scared and actually many said that their child liked my class (which was the opposite the first time because I was still being the mean teacher, establishing my routine and expectations).

Sadly though, I began to wonder if this is to be expected, at least while I am here. The kids that are truly struggling and the parents that I've tried and tried to contact, weren't there. These are the ones that I need to talk to the most, but no luck. I wonder (and slightly assume) that this will be the case in the future as well, which makes it even tougher to try and reach some of my students (and future students).

I'm glad the conferences went well. Your statement about the parents that you need to talk to reminded me of a conference of yours we went to while you were in middle school. The teacher told us that you never see the parents of the kids you need to talk to. It must be one of those things that you just have to keep trying, and reach the ones that you can.

Sounds like you faced every teacher's problem. All the conferences I went to, the teachers always said its the parents of good students that came, thats why they're good students. Don't fret over the lack of parents, just feel good in the accomplishments you've made. If you find that hard, then look back over your blog because I've been reading them. As for your trip, be careful. But make sure you tell us about it! We are eager to know & are seeing it through your words. We are moms and whether you're ours or belong to a friend, we worry because we care.

I can remember my mother commenting that she didn't know why she bothered to go to conferences, the teachers always said the same thing (yes, I was a good student). But she went anyway.

And a bit of trivia to connect you to home: In 2005/2006, 750 million bushels from Iowa’s crop left the state. More than 55% went to foreign markets. The top destination for Iowa corn? Egypt.
